Not every smile improvement needs porcelain. Cosmetic bonding repairs chips, closes small gaps, and evens out worn edges using composite resin matched to your tooth color, frequently in a single appointment.
What bonding is, and who it’s for
Bonding uses a tooth-colored composite resin that your dentist shapes and polishes by hand, right at the chair. It’s a good fit for small chips, minor gaps, slightly uneven edges, or a tooth that looks shorter or more pointed than its neighbors — cosmetic touch-ups that don’t call for the strength or longevity of a full veneer. Because composite bonds directly to enamel, we can often make these changes without removing any healthy tooth structure at all.
The same material fixes cavities, too
Tooth-colored composite isn’t only cosmetic — it’s also what we use for tooth-colored fillings. Instead of the silver-gray amalgam fillings of decades past, composite is placed directly into a cavity, bonded to the remaining healthy tooth, and shaped and polished to blend in. Because it bonds rather than needing to be wedged into an undercut shape the way amalgam does, a composite filling generally requires removing less of your natural tooth.
What a bonding visit looks like
Most bonding is done in a single visit, with no lab and no waiting. We select a composite shade that matches your surrounding teeth, apply and sculpt the resin in thin layers, then cure it with a light and polish it smooth. For small chips and cosmetic touch-ups, many patients don’t need any numbing at all. We also offer complimentary smoothing and polishing of minor rough edges as part of caring for your smile between larger appointments.
Comfort, if numbing is needed
Enamel itself has no nerve cells, so shallow work limited to enamel — a small chip or minor reshaping — often doesn’t require anesthesia. When a cavity goes deeper or numbing is needed for your comfort, we use our computer-controlled Wand system, which delivers anesthetic gradually and gently rather than with a traditional syringe.
