Dental Sealants for Kids
A quick, painless coating that protects the chewing surfaces of your child’s back teeth from cavities.
The chewing surfaces of molars are covered in tiny pits and grooves, deep enough that a toothbrush bristle often can’t fully reach the bottom. Food and bacteria settle in, and those grooves are where the majority of childhood cavities start. A dental sealant closes them off with a thin, safe protective coating, sharply reducing the chance of decay in the teeth that need protection most.
Who sealants are for
Sealants are most valuable on permanent molars, usually as they come in around ages 6 and 12, while the chewing surfaces are still cavity-free. Some children benefit from sealants on baby molars too, especially if those teeth have deep grooves or a history of cavities. Occasionally an adult with unusually deep grooves and no decay is a good candidate as well. We’ll take a look at your child’s teeth and let you know whether sealants make sense, there’s no pressure either way.
What the visit looks like
Applying sealants is one of the simplest visits a child can have:
- The tooth is cleaned and dried
- A liquid sealant is painted into the grooves of the chewing surface
- A curing light hardens it in seconds
- We check the bite to make sure it feels natural
No numbing, no drilling, and no downtime. Most kids are back to their day within minutes, and many barely notice anything happened. It’s a good first “procedure” for a child who’s nervous about the dentist, since there’s genuinely nothing here to be nervous about.
Part of a bigger prevention plan
Sealants work alongside, not instead of, the basics: brushing, flossing, fluoride, and regular cleanings. We check existing sealants at every hygiene visit and touch them up if they’ve worn or chipped, which can happen over years of chewing.
