Teeth Cleanings & Preventive Care

Gentle, thorough cleanings from our experienced hygiene team. Regular cleanings are the foundation of a healthy mouth.

A professional cleaning removes the hardened plaque (tartar) that brushing and flossing can’t reach on their own. It’s simple, it’s not glamorous, and it’s still one of the most effective things you can do to prevent cavities and gum disease. Cleanings also give us a regular checkpoint: a chance to catch a soft spot before it becomes a cavity, or an inflamed pocket before it becomes gum disease, while it’s still small and inexpensive to treat.

What a cleaning visit looks like here

Your cleaning is performed by one of our registered dental hygienists and paired with an exam. For most patients, we rely on ultrasonic scalers for the bulk of the work: a high-frequency vibrating tip paired with a steady water rinse breaks up plaque and tartar above and below the gumline faster and more comfortably than hand scaling alone. We finish tooth by tooth with hand instruments, checking that every surface is smooth. From there, a typical visit includes:

  • Polishing to remove surface stain and smooth the enamel
  • Flossing between every tooth
  • Gum measurements to screen for periodontal disease
  • An oral cancer screening and an exam with the dentist
  • Digital X-rays when it’s time for updated ones

Because we practice Complete Health dentistry, we’re also looking at the bigger picture during your visit: how your gums are doing, any signs of grinding or clenching, and the oral-systemic connections research keeps drawing between a healthy mouth and a healthy body.

Comfort matters

A routine cleaning shouldn’t hurt. If you have sensitive teeth, get nervous in the chair, or have had a rough experience elsewhere, say so. Your hygienist will adjust pressure, take it slower, and explain each step as they go. There’s no dental-office etiquette you’re supposed to already know, just tell us what you need.

Getting back on track

If it’s been a few years since your last cleaning, don’t worry. We’re a judgment-free office, and picking back up is easier than most people expect. Many Thousand Oaks and Conejo Valley patients visit us twice a year for cleanings paired with a routine exam, though we’ll tailor your schedule to your own gum health rather than a one-size-fits-all interval. If you’re due, book your visit online, or give us a call. New to the practice? Here’s what your first visit will include.

Common questions

How often should I have my teeth cleaned?

For most patients, a professional cleaning and exam every six months is the standard recommendation. If you have gum disease or other risk factors, we may suggest coming in more often. We’ll tailor the schedule to you.

Does a dental cleaning hurt?

A routine cleaning shouldn’t hurt. Our hygienists are gentle, and if you have sensitive teeth or get nervous at the dentist, tell us. We’ll slow down and adjust.

Will my insurance cover cleanings?

Most PPO dental plans cover preventive cleanings and exams. We’re in-network with Delta Dental Premier, and our front desk will verify your coverage for free before your visit.

What’s an ultrasonic cleaning?

An ultrasonic scaler uses high-frequency vibration paired with a steady water rinse to break up plaque and tartar quickly and comfortably. We finish tooth by tooth with hand instruments, checking that every surface is smooth.

Do I really need to floss every day?

Yes. Plaque can harden into tartar within about 24 hours if it’s left undisturbed, so daily consistency matters more than an occasional deep effort. A quick nightly pass beats a thorough one once a week.

Why does my floss shred or catch on certain teeth?

Floss usually catches on a filling with a rough edge, tartar buildup, or trapped debris. Smoothing a rough filling and keeping up with regular cleanings usually solves it, so it’s worth mentioning to your hygienist.
