TMJ, Migraines & Jaw Pain
Relief for jaw pain, clicking, clenching, and tension headaches through bite analysis and occlusal therapy.
Jaw pain, morning headaches, clicking or popping when you open wide, teeth that look shorter and flatter than they used to. These are common signs that your jaw joints, muscles, or bite are under chronic strain. Many people clench or grind for years without realizing it, until symptoms like these show up.
What’s actually happening
The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) connect your jaw to your skull, and they do an enormous amount of work every day: chewing, talking, swallowing. When those joints, the muscles around them, or the way your teeth meet get out of balance, often from clenching, grinding, stress, or a longstanding bite problem, the strain can show up as jaw pain, a limited or uneven opening, clicking or popping, ear discomfort, or tension headaches and migraine-like pain radiating from the jaw and temple muscles.
A conservative, diagnosis-first approach
We start by understanding your specific situation: how your joints move, which muscles are tender or overworked, how your teeth meet, and any wear patterns that point to grinding. Dr. Hong has nearly 200 hours of advanced TMJ and occlusal therapy training from The Pankey Institute, and that training shapes how we evaluate and treat jaw and bite problems here in Thousand Oaks.
For most patients, treatment starts with a custom occlusal guard. Ours are 3D-printed from a digital scan of your teeth (no impression goop) for a precise fit that redistributes biting force and lets the joint and muscles rest. Targeted bite adjustments come in when they’re warranted. The goal throughout is lasting relief through the least invasive approach that actually addresses what’s going on, not just the symptoms.
Why it’s worth treating
Chronic clenching and grinding don’t just cause pain, they also wear down and crack teeth over time and can damage existing dental work. Treating the underlying strain helps protect your natural teeth as well as any fillings, crowns, or veneers you already have. Because jaw and bite comfort are tied closely to sleep and day-to-day comfort, it’s also part of how we think about Complete Health dentistry more broadly.
Next steps
If jaw pain, clicking, or headaches sound familiar, mention it at your next visit, or call us to come in sooner for an evaluation. Waiting rarely makes a bite problem better on its own, and a real evaluation gives you answers instead of guesswork.
Common questions
What is TMJ disorder?
The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) connect your jaw to your skull. When the joint, muscles, or bite are strained, often by clenching or grinding, the result can be jaw pain, clicking, limited opening, ear discomfort, and headaches.
Can my headaches really come from my bite?
They can. Chronic clenching and an unbalanced bite overwork the jaw and temple muscles, which is a common contributor to tension headaches and migraine-like pain. A bite evaluation can tell us whether your jaw is part of the picture.
How is TMJ pain treated?
Treatment is conservative first: typically a custom-fitted occlusal guard (nightguard), bite adjustments where appropriate, and habit and posture coaching. Most patients improve without anything invasive.
What can I do about jaw pain at home?
For short-term, acute strain, rest, switching between ice and heat, and an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory can help take the edge off. But persistent pain, clicking, or a jaw that locks or catches deserves a real evaluation rather than ongoing home management.
